Library and Reading Solutions partner to offer free children’s Learning Lab

Poplar Bluff Municipal Library is partnering with Reading Solutions Learning Lab of Poplar Bluff, hosting Learning Labs for children at the library on Monday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Tuesday, June 6 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesday, June 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.

During the Learning Labs, children in grades K – 12 play three games with Reading Solutions personnel. The games are tools, revealing whether a child’s eyes are working together, whether sounds are identified within words, and seeing the movement of the eyes on a computer screen during a silent reading activity. To children, it is pure fun; to parents, it may be the clue needed to explain why a child is struggling to read.

“Functional vision and the ability to rhyme words are two important pre-reading skills,” said Sheri Kennedy, Reading Solutions for All Educational Consultant and Learning Lab Founder and Director. “Developing pre-reading skills eliminates stress, making reading and spelling enjoyable activities. By pinpointing, then teaching missing micro-skills, students learn to overcome reading obstacles, develop self-confidence, and enjoy reading!”

“The library is excited to present this opportunity to parents and caregivers, and grateful to the educators at Reading Solutions for this important community outreach,” said Sue Szostak, library director. “The Learning Labs are offered during the opening days of our Children’s Summer Reading Program, a program that keeps youngsters engaged in summer learning. Participation includes children having stories read to them, or listening to audiobooks, or even doing good deeds for family and family friends. We have something fun to do all summer for all reading levels, knowing that reading levels improve over time and preventing the ‘summer slide.’”
